Supporters expect to gather to promote gender equality and rights in Maryland

[Annapolis, MD] — On Monday, February 19, 2018, various groups across Maryland will hold an evening rally at 7:00 p.m. at Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis to support a statewide progressive agenda for women. Numerous organizations are co-sponsoring the event and will be joined with state legislators and advocates to speak on issues and legislative measures promoting healthy families, reproductive justice, and economic security, as well as those seeking to stop violence against women.

Delegate Maricé Morales (D19), one of the lead organizers of the event, will serve as MC of the rally. “We are proud to host our fourth Women’s Rally in Annapolis,” Morales stated. “Last year’s rally brought over 450+ Marylanders rallying to level the playing field for women. This year, we are delighted to be joined by leaders showcasing the intersectionality of womanism. We are incredibly excited to contribute to the momentum around women’s rights resulting in greater participation of constituents coming to Annapolis and engaging in the legislative process on issues that speak to them!”

Scheduled speakers include Speaker of the House, Michael E. Busch (D-30A), Del. Cheryl Glenn (D-45). Del. Ariana Kelly (D-16), Sen. Susan Lee (D-16), Del. Maggie McIntosh D-43), and Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk (D-21).

Rally sponsors include NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, Planned Parenthood of Maryland, FreeState Justice, Women’s Law Center of Maryland, Maryland National Organization for Women, Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA), Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women (MLAW), Montgomery County National Organization for Women, and MomsRising. Numerous speakers will be representing these groups and more.

Representing NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, Executive Director Diana Philip plans to call for increased attention to all legislation moving through the Maryland General Assembly. “This rally will help Marylanders become more informed about bills to protect and advance gender equality, and with this being an election year, everyone should be watching how legislators vote on issues that would  harm our rights to help decide which candidates to support during the upcoming primary” stated Philip.

The media is invited to join scheduled speakers at 6:30 p.m. for pre-rally interviews at Lawyer’s Mall, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD.
