Hashmat Sherani joined NARAL’s Pro-Choice Maryland team of interns during Fall 2020. She is a sophomore at Montgomery College, where she is completing an associate’s degree in Social Sciences and Humanities. Hashmat plans to complete a bachelor’s degree in Socio-Cultural Anthropology in her transfer to a university. As a member of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Program, Hashmat presented a CAPSTONE project discussing menstrual taboos cross-culturally, emphasizing their adverse effects on women’s health and rights. She created posters, brochures, and an educational cartoon video exploring how menstrual taboos limit and oppress women while debunking common myths about menstruation. With NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, Hashmat hopes to understand the legal dynamics of fighting for women’s and girls’ rights. She intends to employ her understanding of culture and society in her work with NARAL. Hashmat is confident that, as a legal policy and research intern, she will nurture her passion for women’s health and reproductive rights.
