Who is affected by period poverty?

Period poverty is the inability to purchase menstrual products. For people struggling financially, other necessities such as food and rent often come before menstrual products, so many go without them. According to National Institutes of Health, the average age of menarche (first period) for Hispanic and African American girls is lower than the average menarche for white girls. This means that BIPOC are disproportionately affected by a lack of menstrual products, especially in elementary schools.
