Shay is entering her fourth year as a student at the Indiana University O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She is pursuing a degree in Nonprofit Management and Leadership with a certificate in Political and Civic Engagement and minors in Community Development & Urban Planning and Social Welfare Advocacy.
In partnership with the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV), Shay most recently presented her interactive, online workshop “Youth Defined Prevention Strategies” at the National Resource Center for Domestic Violence Town Hall in September, 2020. Shay also has previous experience working with organizations that influence state and national policy making, including as an Advocacy Intern with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Indiana affiliate office in 2019. At ACLU Indiana, Shay created a 160 page “Brief Book” detailing the legislative background, legislative record, and voting history of Indiana state representatives to be used for lobbying purposes at the Statehouse in the next legislative session. In her role, she also conducted legislative advocacy research on issues concerning anti-trans legislation, criminal justice reform, LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive rights.
Shay joined the intern team at NARAL-Pro Choice Maryland Fund as a Spring 2021 Jonathan Shurberg Legal & Policy Research Intern and will be continuing during the summer to further her communications skills with the Access Team Initiative. She is looking forward to learning more about the landscape of abortion care in Maryland, especially compared to her home state of Indiana, and improving access to quality sexual and reproductive healthcare for individuals.
